Automobiles powered by the sun’s energy are known as solar cars. These revolutionary vehicles generate electricity from panels mounted on them, using the light of the sun to drive them forward. As an added bonus, solar cars don’t release any emissions and are highly cost-efficient.

Charles Anderson made a breakthrough in the early 1900s when he invented the world’s first solar car. This remarkable machine was fitted with a roof-mounted solar panel that enabled it to be powered by the sun’s rays, with an electric motor connected to get it moving. Although it could only hit a top speed of around 5 miles per hour, Anderson’s car was a remarkable achievement for its time.

In the 1970s, when the oil industry endured several crises, there was a sudden surge of interest in vehicles powered by solar energy. This sparked General Motors to take action and introduce the Sunraycer in 1977, a remarkable automobile capable of reaching speeds up to 60mph. Impressively, the Sunraycer went on to achieve success in a variety of competitions.

With greatly enhanced technology in the 1990s, solar-powered cars emerged onto the market. At the turn of the century, Honda Insight debuted as the first mass-produced model powered solely by this renewable resource. A rooftop panel absorbed energy from the sun and directed it towards a motor that was in turn responsible for driving wheels. This eco-friendly vehicle combined impressive efficiency with an outstanding mileage performance of up to 70 miles per gallon.

As humanity continues its pursuit of a more sustainable future, many individuals have turned to solar-powered vehicles as a solution. Today, this type of renewable energy-fueled auto comes in plethora of designs, from fast-paced racers to reliable everyday models. This surging popularity indicates how cost-effective and eco-friendly solar automobiles are in this modern era.
